Vauxhall Cadet VY/VX 1939-33 Vauxhall launched the VY/VX Cadet in 1930 with a 17hp engine (VY), or a 26hp (VX) engine for export. The Cadet was styled by Eric Kennington but with direction from a GM team, although it is thought that the GM design for the Opel Kadett were plagiarised for the VX/VY model. A new 6-cylinder ohv engine of 2,048cc was given to the 17hp VY models, and a different 3,180cc engine for the export 26hp VX models - this larger engine derived from a Chevrolet engine. Sales were slow and in 1931 the Cadet was improved with 12-volt electrics, synchromesh gears, improved steering and altered front bumper and headlamps. But the car was too big for a British market which was now buying cars at 14hp or less, so the ASY/ASX Light Six was launched in May 1933. In order to create the Light Six the Cadet chassis was shortened by 6-inches, and the width reduced by 4.5-inches. |
