Wolseley 18/85, Six
Austin debuted the ADO17 model in October 1964 as the 'Austin 1800' and Morris dealers had to wait until March 1966 for the Morris 1800. The Wolseley version waited until March 1967 to reach the market, and differed only in having traditional Wolseley styling and luxury trim. A Riley version was developed, as was a Vanden-Plas version, but both were dropped early in development. The Wolseley 18/85 MkII followed late behind the Austin/Morris 1800 MkII and went on sale in Spring 1969. In the same year, Wolseley were also given an 'S' tuned version to sell, and this offered similar performance and luxury to the larger Austin 3-litre which cost 20per cent more to buy. In March 1972 the Wolseley 18/85 range was extended as the 'Wolseley Six' with a new 6-cylinder version of the Austin Maxi E-series engine. The ordinary Wolseley 18/85 was upgraded to MkIII, but retained its 'cow hips' rear styling and did not get the fins of the Austin/Morris Mk3 cars. Production ended in 1975 after 60,000 Wolseley 18/85 and Wolseley Six cars had been sold, replaced by the short-lived Wolseley 18-22.
