The Guilietta range was launched with the Bertone-designed Sprint by Franco Scaglione in 1954 because the Berlina was not ready. A 1,290cc twin cam 4-cylinder engine powered the Guilietta, but in 1956 an 80bhp Sprint Veloce was introduced with twin Webers and high compression. Pininfarina was asked to design a convertible Giulietta and this was launched as the Spider at the 1956 Turin show. The Sprint body was slightly revised in 1959 by Giorgetto Giugiaro as probably his first work for Nuccio Bertone. In 1962 the Series 105 Alfa Romeo Giulia took over from the Giulietta with an entirely new body, but the Sprint and Spider models remained in production as Tipo 101, renamed 'Giulia' and given Giulia engines and mechanics.
