Allard J1, J2, J2X Postwar Allard brought out the Allard J1 with a Ford Pilot 3.6-litre V8 engine, although this used to overheat and was down on power. Transverse leaf springs were fitted front and rear, and the car was given a basic body with removable wings for competition. Split front axle suspension was bought from Leslie Bellamy who had a v8-engined special that came to the attention of Sydney Allard. The J1 was powered by the 3,622cc Mercury V8 and just 12 were built. It was developed into the J2 and corresponding K2. The J2 was given a 5,428cc Cadillac V8 engine and had a coil sprung De Dion rear axle; 90 were sold. An Allard J2 finished 3rd at the 1950 Le Mans race in spite of gearbox problems. The 1952 J2X was a variant of the Allard J2 with a chassis made of thinner tubes that relied on metal sheets for strength; 83 sold. A couple of J2X cars were given all enveloping bodywork at Encons to comply with the Le Mans ban on cycle wings. The 1952 team cars were given Chrysler 5340cc Hemi V8 engines, and unfortunately both failed to finish the 1952 Le Mans race owing to mechanical problems. A Sports Tourer car was built on a longer chassis as the K2. |
