Allard Palm Beach MkI and MkII From 1952 Allard built the smaller and lighter Palm Beach sports car on a 96-inch wheelbase. The Palm Beach used a K3 tubular chassis with swing axle suspensionLooking like a contemporary Aston Martin, MGA, or Austin-Healey 100 the Palm Beach was built around the Ford Consul 1,508cc four cylinder (8 produced) and Ford Zephyr 2,262cc six cylinder (65 produced) engines. Zora Arkus-Duntov is believed to have been involved in the chassis design, but would soon be engaged by Chevrolet to sort out the Corvette. The first cars had 3-abreast seating. The Palm Beach MkII was launched in 1956 with modernised design and a larger bonnet so that V8 engines could be fitted. Palm Beach MkII were not offered with 4-cylinder engines, but the Jaguar 3,442cc six was an option. Only a handful were made and in 1959 Allards ceased vehicle production. |
