Alvis TB 14, TB 21 After the war the 12/70 design was rekindled and lightly modified to become the Alvis TA 14. Wheelbase and track were increased and the engine uprated to 1892cc. AP Metalcraft produced a sporting twin carb TB14 version for the 1948 London Motor Show. It was a brave attempt at something modern, but somewhat shown up by the Jaguar XK120 which debuted at the same show. Willowbrook built the controversial design which was based on the work of the Belgian coachbuilder F.J. Bidée. Alvis did not like the ommission of a traditional grille and the TB14 sold just 100. In 1950 the Alvis TA 21 was launched, almost all new, taking the 12/70 recipe and refining it with new chassis and a 6-cylinder 2993cc engine. The Metalcraft Sports body was revisited to be sold with TA 21 base as the TB 21, but even with a conventional grille the car was not popular and just 31 were sold. |
