Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire 'Sapphire' was a name used by Armstrong-Siddeley on its turbojet engine, and was given to the new model launched at the 1952 London Motor Show. A new 3435cc ohv 6-cylinder engine was created for the Sapphire based on work by W.O. Bentley and Fred Allard. A new 4.0-litre version of this engine was given to the Star Sapphire in 1958, and the original engine was copied by Humber for their 1958 Super Snipe. The Sapphire body was of traditional design and built onto a separate chassis frame; 4-light and 6-light versions were available. A limousine version of the Sapphire was also available from 1959. In 1960 production ended by Armstrong-Siddeley decided to concentrate on aircraft manufacture. |
