Aston Martin Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford had formed a partnership to sell Singer cars, and in 1913 they decided to make their own vehicles. The name 'Aston' came from a hillclimb event at Aston Hill. Production had to wait until after The Great War. Various bankrupties and restarts happened until it was set up as Aston Martin Motors in 1926 and moved to an old aircraft factory at Feltham. The new company was lead by Bertelli who had helped to develop a 4-cylinder twin cam engine that now needed a car; capitalising on the brand 'Aston Martin' Bertelli set out to make vehicles for his engine. Bankruptcy followed after Bertelli over extended his finances on the race track, and by 1936 under another new owner Aston Martin decided to concentrate on road cars. In 1947 David Brown bought Aston Martin and kept ownership until 1972 when again the company had to be bailed out. By 1991 Ford had bought Aston Martin eventually putting it into a stable with Jaguar, but this division was sold off by Ford in 2007. |
