Aston Martin S-type, T-type In 1926 Aston Martin Motors Ltd was formed when the Charnwood family bought out Lionel Martin and his association with Renwick & Bertelli who had just produced a new 1495cc 4-cylinder engine of 56 bhp. The S-type was launched at the 1927 London Motor Show, at the same time as the longer T-type saloon and T-type Tourer. The T-type (or MkI) were slow sellers, but the short chassis S-type Sports cars sold better, and an associated Bertelli company (brother to AC Bertelli) supplied the bodies. Competition versions were created for the 1928 Le Mans race (DNF) and subsequent British events. Three new team cars were built for the 1931 Le Mans race and achieved 5th overall and 1st in class. A production model with underslung classis based on the 1929 LM1 team car was launched as the 'International' in 1929. The 1931 Team cars were celebrated by the 1931 International Le Mans product. A 'New' International car was launched in 1932 built on a new chassis and with cheaper bought-in components. The 1932 LM10 Le Mans Team car achieved 5th overall and first in Class at the 1932 Le Mans 24 hour race and the same car achieved 7th overall and 2nd in class in the 1933 race. Aston Martin production brought out the Le Mans 2 in 1932 to celebrate the 1932 result. Less sporting was the 12/50 Standard car on a long wheelbase sold in 1932 and 1933 |
