Aston Martin DB3 and DB3S and DBR1 The DB3 was a short-lived racing version of the Aston Martin DB2. David Brown brought Eberan von Eberhorst over to design the car as he had designed the pre-war Auto Union. First raced in 1951 with the 2.6-litre engine and 160bhp, the car was too heavy. Even the 2.9-litre 160bhp engine could not get the heavy car to fly. Aston Martin developed the DB3S to replace the DB3 which had disappointed. Willie Watson replaced the German as engineer for the DB3S and Frank Feeley designed the body. From 1953 to 1956 the DB3S raced 35 times and finished in the top 3 every single time with 15 victories. 20 customer cars were produced from 1954-56. Aston Martin developed the DBR1 from 1956 to take over from the DB3S, and new rules allowed it to be a car not related to any production models. 5 DBR1 cars were constructed achieving victories in all years, and winning the Le Mans 24 hours in 1959 and the World Championship the same year. |
