Aston Martin DB4, DB4GT Racing
Aston had intentions on racing with the DB4 right from its introduction in 1958 even though the Works racing team was disbanded after winning the Le Mans 24hour and the World Championship in 1959. A prototype car with the code 'DP199/1' was the forerunner of the DB4GT which was launched at the 1959 London Motor Show. Aston shortened the chassis by 13cm and a thinner aluminium used to reduce the body weight by 45kilos; an even lighter racing version could be ordered. Engine power was boosted to 302bhp and Astons took to the tracks again in private teams with 75 of these DB4GTs. In 1964 the even lighter DB4GT Zagato replaced this coupe, but only 20 copies were made.

The faired in headlamps were characteristic of the DB4 GT but were later taken on by the DB5 and DB6.

Using thinner Aluminium panels over the Superleggera chassis, along with a shortened wheelbase, approximately 100lbs weight was saved. An even lighter version could be ordered for track use. Twin fuel fillers fed into a single tank
