In 1968 there was still no successor to the ADO16 in development so project ADO67 was started to be launched in 1973 as the Austin Allegro. Using much of the Austin 1100/1300 engineering re-packaged and with a new bodyshell, the styling was mainly the work of ex-Ford designer Harris Mann

Austin Allegro 1300 Super S2 2-door. Allegro 1300 models made do with 54bhp 1275cc versions of the A-series engine. There was also a 1485cc version with the Maxi E-series overhead cam engine.

Austin Allegro 1300 Super S2 2-door. 2-door versions of the Allegro were available from launch in 1973 for many different specifications. The design by Harris Mann was said to be more aerodynamic travelling backwards.

Austin Allegro 1300 Super S2 4-door rear
Austin Allegro 1300 Super S2. The Series 2 Allegro from 1975 was mildly re-worked, gaining added-on reversing lamps at the rear. Rear seat legroom was also increased and the 'quartic' steering wheel went round!

Austin Allegro 1300 Super S2 Estate. The 3-door estate was launched in 1974, and those who thought the saloon Allegro was a 'flying pig' considered the estate version even worse to look at.

Austin Allegro 1300 Super S2 Estate. Often derided as a 'hearse' on account of its looks, these critics missed the facts that the Allegro estate was a capacious and practical estate car.

Austin Allegro 1500 Super S2. The Allegro was launched with an option for the 1485cc E-series engine as this was seen as likely to be the big seller. There was also a 1748cc version with the engine from the Maxi 1750.

Austin Allegro Equipe front
Austin Allegro Equipe. Stripes like those of the 'Starsky and Hutch' cop series, and spoilers galore hid a 2-door version of the Allegro 1750HL. Even though it shouted louder than it ran, it was a better car than it looked.

Austin Allegro Equipe. Most of the 2-door models of the Allegro were culled early in the model's life, but this shell was brought back and kitted out to give the Allegro 'sporting' pretensions; it even had a rubber spoiler underneath the rear window.
