Austin miniMetro, Metro
Alec Issigonis started on Project 9X to replace the Mini with a Super Mini concept as long ago as 1967, but his proposals were not approved. ADO 74 took over the attempt to replace the Mini but it grew in size and cost and was also cancelled. In 1974 British Leyland sanctioned the ADO 88 Project (Later 'LC 8) to produce a Super Mini with an 88inch wheelbase, and this was launched as the Austin MiniMetro in October 1980. David Bache had finalised the styling of the Metro, and its engineering owed much to the outgoing ADO 16 and Mini cars. In 1982 Vanden Plas Metros were available with extra equipment and a mildly tuned MG Metro was also launched, and then a MG Metro Turbo was announced. The Metro was facelifted by Roy Axe in 1985, and a 5-door version was also announced. For 1990 the Metro was re-engineered and restyled to be launched as the Rover Metro (Or Rover 100) with a new K-series engine and Peugeot gearbox.

Austin Metro Clubman 1.1L. The Metro Clubman was short-lived model sold from 1989 to 1990. The grille shows the post 1987 badge, resembling a Rover shield but having the word 'Metro' instead; Austin badging was not used after 1987.
Austin Metro 13 HLE front
Austin Metro 1.3 HLE. HLE versions of the Metro were available from 1981-86 having a higher compression 44bhp engine. Combination headlamp and indicator units that were flush with the grille were fitted to the better equipped Metros.

Austin Metro City X 1990 front
Austin Metro City X 1989. The Metro City was available from 1985 to 1989, with the City X having a rear wash wipe. A 998cc A-plus engine powered the Metro City. After 1987 the 'Austin' badge was dropped a new Rover-like badge on the grille carried the word 'Metro'.

Austin Metro City X 1990. The Metro City replaced the base Metro in 1985. A little less spartan, the City X included a little more equipment such as a rear wash-wipe.
Austin Metro Clubman 13L front
Austin Metro Clubman 1.3L. Roy Axe produced the modest restyle for the Mk2 Metro from 1984 and also the 5-door version. This 1990 Clubman wears a Rover-like badge given to all Metros in place of the 'Austin' badge from 1987.

Austin Metro Clubman 1.3L. 'Clubman' versions of the Metro were available with 4 engine variations and 3 or 5-door body styles from late 1989 to 1990. This looks like a marketing ploy to sell off the Mk2 Metro stocks before the arrival of the Mk3 in 1990.

Austin Metrol GTa 1990. The GTa was introduced in October 1988 to replace the MG Metro. The specification was similar to the outgoing MG version, with 73bhp 1275cc engine
