Bedford Bus
Bedford became a big player in the bus market after the launch of the bus edition of the Bedford S-type (the 'Bedford SB') in 1950. This lightweight chassis appealed to coachbuilders more than the heavier lorry-based AEC and Leyland types. Furthermore, the forward control layout place the engine beside the driver and over the front axle giving more room for seats. The SB was such a success it continued in production until 1987 when Bedford itself ceased all production. Alongside the SB other bus chassis were produced including the longer VAL with famous 3-axle design.
