Rolls-Royce Motors decided to rationalise production to reduce costs and the first result of this was the Bentley MkV. Its B60 4,257cc six cylinder engine was the first of an engine range designed to have common pistons, valves, etc and to be shared with other models. The Rolls-Royce Wraith had an aluminium head version of this engine. The Bentley MkV was built on a 124-inch wheelbase (Wraith 136-inch). As World War Two broke out, the MkV range only produced 17 cars. Four expermental cars were built on MkV platforms as pre-development models for the MkVI. The MkV evolved into the MkVI after the War with the same engine on a 120-inch wheelbase.
