1971 saw the launch of the ninth generation of Eldorado, still built on the GM E-body as the front wheel drive Eldorados had always been. But it now grew to a 126.3-inch wheelbase and 223-inches overall (later 224). Bill Mitchell signed off the Eldorado design but it wasn't his best effort. In addition to the Eldorado Coupe there was from 1971 a convertible too. The first restyle came in 1973 with the large egg-crate grille, and 51,451 were sold. From 1974 new front and rear ends were given to satisfy 5mph bumper regulations. Rectangular headlamps appeared in 1975, and 1976 was the last year for the Eldorado convertible. Modest changes were made in 1977 and 1978 ahead of the new downsized Eldorado in 1979
