Chevrolet brought out a new B-body on a 117.5-inch wheelbase for 1958. 1958 Chevrolets were built on a new 'Safety-Girder' cruciform frame that Cadillac had pioneered on its 1957 models. The One-Fifty was now named 'Delray' and the Two-Ten 'Biscayne', whilst a new 'Impala' Coupe or convertible topped off the 1958 BelAirs. A recession hit sales across the American Auto markets in 1958 with sales nose-diving to 66 per cent of 1957. But Chevrolet still managed healthy sales. A new big-block 5,694cc (348) V8 was optional to take up the extra weight, but the old 'Blue Flame' 3,859cc (235) Six was still the entry level power. For 1959 a much bigger car was developed.
