Chevrolet Corvette C1
Harley Earl had the vision for the Corvette and commissioned a concept car to be built on existing Chevrolet parts and exhibited at the 1953 Motorama. The concept car was given a fibreglass body for ease of building but it was intended that the production car use steel, but in the end the popularity of the Motorama car determined that the Corvette was rushed into production with a fibreglass body. A mere 315 Corvettes were built in 1953, hand-built and produced in a temporary factory, and there were many quality issues. A new factory was opened in 1954 at Flint, Michigan and Zora Arkus-Duntov brought in to develop the car. In quick time a new 265 cu.in. V8 engine was developed and given to the 1956 Corvettes. Corvettes for 1956 were also restyled with side 'coves' behind the front wheel arches and power bulges in the bonnet by Bob Cadaret under Clare MacKichan. For 1958 GM widened the Corvette body by 2.3-inches and lengthened it by 9.2-inches. More and more performance options became available from the factory as Corvettes racked up a number of race wins. Under Bill Mitchell the styling of the Corvette was simplified, but a big change had to wait for the new Corvette C2 in 1963.
