Chevrolet Corvette C2 'Sting Ray' In 1961 Chevrolet had presented a show car called the 'Mako Shark I', with elements based on the real fish upon the initiative by Bill Mitchell. There was also a 1959 Bill Mitchell concept car called 'Sting Ray' and the Chevrolet C2 was a productionised version of these. The Corvette Sting Ray was launched in 1963 and was a radical departure from previous Corvettes. A new lower chassis with independent rear suspension was given, but the 327cu in (5,359cc) V8 continued from 1962. Most striking of all was the body by Larry Shinoda (under Bill Mitchell), and the introduction of a new fixed head coupe model which went into production before the convertible. A split rear window was a feature of the 1963 model year, but was 'unsplit' for 1964 after Zora Arkus-Duntov won his arguments about it giving poor visibility. Pop-up headlamps were new to the Sting Ray. A 6,489cc 'Big Block' V8 was offered for 1965 in the 425bhp 396 'TurboJet' model, but this was replaced by a 6,999cc engine in the 'TurboJet 427' for 1966. Not much was changed for 1967 and for 1968 a new C3 Corvette was launched based on the 'Mako Shark II' concept. |
