The first Impala was given life as one of a range of models for each General Motors brand to celebrate 50 years of GM. In this case the Impala was a top version of the BelAir, but it was only offered as a Sport Coupe or a convertible in its first year. However, the Sport Coupe differed from the BelAir 2-door hardtop by having a shorter cabin and a longer rear deck by Joseph R. Schemansky. Most Impalas came with a 283 V8, but a 348 was optional and a Blue Flame Six could also be chosen. Production for 1958 was 55,989 Impala convertibles and 125,480 coupes.
