A new generation Newport was launched in 1969, more rounded than the outgoing generation square look. Its sides bowed out in a style called the 'fuselage look', which did have a horizontal line below the beltline until the 1972 reskin. The new style was shared with the mid-range New Yorker and the top range Imperial. A 5.9-litre V8 was the standard power for the Newport, but other options including the 7.2-litre 440 could be specified. The Newport was offered as a 2-door hardtop or convertible (no convertibles after 1970), or as a 4-door sedan or 4-door hardtop. 'Custom' was the top level trim, but a 'Royal' trim level was sold below the Custom in 1971 only.
