Gurney Nutting Jack Gurney Nutting developed his building and joinery company into a coachbuilders in 1918 based at Croydon. They moved to Chelsea in 1923 after a fire at Croydon and quickly established a reputation for classic style. Gurney Nutting got a Weymann patent in 1924 enabling them to build lightweight. In the same year AF McNeil joined Gurney Nutting as designer. Royal patronage followed from 1928, and Gurney Nutting moved from fabric-bodied cars to more curvaceous metal panelled bodies. McNeil took up a post at James Young before WW2 and was replaced for a time by John Blatchley. Gurney Nutting died in 1946, and his company ceased soon after exhibiting at the 1948 London Motor Show. |
