Jennings of Sandbach Jennings were coachbuilders in the 1930s and as various coachbuilders tried to combine a touring caravan with a car chassis, it was Jennings who achieved the breakthrough. In 1934 a Jennings motorhome was available for mounting onto an Austin 12 chassis. Jennings stopped motorhome building for the war years, and only restarted after they were taken over by Central Garages (Bradford) in 1964. Central Garages were builders of the famous luxury 'Paralanian' motorhome from 1957, and it was this design that formed the basis of a new range. Jennings was sold by Central Garages and some of their staff went to Jennings and almost copied the Paralanian to form the Roadranger which was available from 1965 on a number of chassis. JH Jennings allowed Dennis and ER Foden space on the Sandbach premises to build the first ERF Truck which was launched in 1933. Later, this relationship with ERF provided Jennings with a specialist ERF Fire Engine chassis for their coachwork, and the Jennings Fire business became Saxon. It was Gerald Broadbent of JH Jennings who designed the KV ('Klear View') cab that proved so succesful for ERF from 1952. |
