Daimler Cars In 1896 British company FR Simms acquired the rights to sell cars in Britain with the 'Daimler' name and sold licensed models from many French and German companies. By 1910 it was building its own cars with Knight Sleeve Valve engines, but was purchased by BSA in that year and supplemented car production with engine building and military vehicles. The fluted radiator was first fitted in 1907 as a cooling aid and has symbolised the marque ever since. BSA purchased Lanchester in 1930 and merged the two makes, with Hooper and Barker being added. In 1951 Ariel and Triumph motorcycles were sold to BSA, and Edward Turner their engineer would produce two new Daimler V8 engines. But Daimler couldn't compete with companies such as Jaguar and in 1960 were bought out by the leaping cat. |
