Marquis Jules-Albert de Dion, Georges Bouton, and Charles Trepardoux (brother-in-law to Bouton) founded De Dion-Bouton in 1883 after De Dion visited the toy shop of Bouton et Trepardoux and asked them to build a toy steam locomotive. The toy was scaled up to become small scale production of various steam cars, not all competently engineered. De Dion saw the future in internal combustion engines and marketed a tricycle in 1896. Louis Renault modified a De Dion Bouton in 1898 to build the first Renault. In 1900 De Dion Bouton marketed a four wheel car with a 402cc engine, and the engine was also sold to 150 other manufacturers. In 1903 the engine had grown to 942cc and was now mounted at the front, and a 1,728cc twin cylinder and a 2,545cc 4-cylinder cars were added in 1904. The first mass produced engine was 6,107cc sold from 1910 with larger engines following. But the company declined, surviving the First World War building trucks, aircraft engines and munitions, but postwar De Dion Bouton had been left behind and did not make any more cars after 1932, but continued producing lorries until 1950.
