DeLorean DMC-12
Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1976, the original car was engineered by DeLorean's William T. Collins. John Z. DeLorean was the youngest vice president in General Motor's history, but in the 1970s he left GM to head up his own sports car project. The car was subsequently re-engineered by Colin Chapman whose Lotus company took the DMC-12 to manufacturing readiness. Advanced composite construction clad with stainless steel and A Citroen Wankel engine all had to be replaced more conventional fibreglass and stainless steel bodywork and a Peugeot-Renault-Volvo V6 engine. But John Z. DeLorean was in trouble over drugs and his inexperienced workforce in Belfast were turning out poor quality. The DMC-12 was only produced in 1981 and 1982 and about 9200 were sold.

DeLorean DMC-12. The outer panels of the DeLorean were made of Stainless Steel, but underneath there was a structure of glass reinforced plastic similar to that used for the Lotus Esprit. The Stainless Steel panels were actually quite difficult to keep clean, and fingerprints were especially tiresome.

DeLorean DMC-12 1981. Engineered by Colin Chapman at Lotus, with a body designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the 'stainless steel' DeLorean was actually a fibreglass body similar in design to other Lotus cars, and the stainless steel was just stuck on the outside

DeLorean DMC-12. A prototype was developed by William T. Collins, chief engineer and designer. Subsequently the production car body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and engineered by Colin Chapman of Lotus. It was built in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. during 1981 and 1982.

DeLorean DMC-12. Originally designed in 1976, the DMC-12 was to have been much more advanced than the production car, with new moulding techniques and the possibility of a Citroen Wankel engine. But DeLorean couldn't make it all work, and called in Colin Chapman to plagiarise his own Esprit for engineering solutions. In the end a PRV 2849cc V6 engine (as used by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo) was fitted in the rear but only gave 150bhp in European models.
