Designer : Flaminio Bertoni
A talented architect and sculptor, Bertoni fled his native Italy following a family fallout over his new wife. In 1932 he was offered a job with Citroën and quickly set to work to create a body for the engineering of André Lefèbvre. Apparently creating the monocoque body using platicine in a single night, the Lefèbvre anbd Bertoni product was the Citroën Traction Avant. Michelin took over Citroën in 1935 after the costs of developing the Traction Avant crippled the company, and engaged Bertoni and Lefèbvre to develop the Tres Petite Voiture which would be launched in 1948 as the Citroën 2CV again styled by Bertoni. The Lefèbvre and Bertoni partnership was not yet over, and even as the 2CV was starting to sell they were asked to work on the Voiture de Grande Diffusion which was launched in 1955 as the Citroën DS its appearance the result of Bertoni's skill. It was 5 years before Bertoni's next design would reach the market place and that was the Ami 6, and the one he liked most. However, the Bertoni pen had also been at work on the abandoned Projet C60 and the Projet F, both precursors of the Ami. Bertoni also designed the 'Belphégor' truck 1965-72.

Citroen Ami 6. In the 1950s Citroën experimented with several models to bridge the gap between the 2CV and the ID19, including the Coccinelle and the C60, before they settled on the simpler Ami 6 designed by Flaminio Bertoni. The Ami 6 was built on 2CV engine and mechanics and was launched in Spring 1961.

Citroen AZ Berline 1955. In 1955 the AZ model of the Citroen 2CV gained a 425cc engine, also used in the AZU Fourgonette Van. The chevrons on the grille are no longer surrounded by a chrome oval.

Citroen ID 19 1961 front
Citroen ID19 1961. Introduced in 1957 the ID19 (ID for 'Idee') retained hydropneumatic suspension, but had mechanical brakes, clutch and steering. The removal of this assistance enabled the detuned 1911cc (62 or 66 bhp) engine to keep up with the more powerful DS19 which lost some of its power to the hydraulic pump.
Citroen Light Fifteen 1937 front
Citroen Light Fifteen 1937. Launched in 1934, Citroen Traction Avant was designed by Flaminio Bertoni. This is a Slough-built Light Fifteen, the British equivalent of the French 11 CV, with a 1911cc engine.
s_Citroen C60 side
Citroën C60. In 1960 Citroën attempted to build a mid-size car between the 2CV and the Citroën DS/ID range, and the C60 appeared to take pieces from both. Flaminio Bertoni styled the C60 which has a front similar to the later DS and a rear like the eventual Citroën Ami which would go to the market in place of the C60. Engine power would have come from an 1100cc or 1400cc air-cooled flat four, with the larger-engined car being sold upmarket with hydropneumatic suspension. Projet C60 was proving costly so Citroën started again with Projet F again styled by Bertoni in 1963 but this too was abandoned, and Bertoni designed the eventual production car the Citroën Ami.
