Ron Hickman Ron Hickman had designed the Lotus Elan, having jumped ship from the Ford Design department where he had worked on projects such as the Ford Anglia. Hickman had also moonlighted to work on the Lotus Elite project with Peter Kirwan-Taylor and Frank Costin. Hickman also designed the Lotus Elan Plus 2. In 1963 after becoming aware that Ford of America wanted to build a Le Mans racer he and Colin Chapman decided to bid for the work. Ron Hickman designed a mid-engined two-seater which was shown to Ford. Lotus lost out to Lola who already had an Eric Broadley engineered contender racing with a body designed by John Frayling. Frayling had earlier worked on the Lotus Elite, and returned to Lotus to turn the too complicated Hickman design into the final Europa. Hickman retired from car design, coming up with the design for the Black and Decker Workmate bench which netted him a fortune. |
