Dino Cars (by Ferrari and Fiat)
The brand 'Dino' was named in memory of Alfredino Ferrari ('Dino') the son of Enzo Ferrari who died of muscular dystrophy in 1956 aged just 24. Before he died Alfredino had suggested a V6 engine for Formula 2 racing and such an engine was made and raced successfully. However by 1967 the rules stated that to be eligible for the Formula 2 racing, the engine block must be used by 500 cars, and the new partnership with Fiat gave the opportunity to jointly produce an engine for road cars and for racing. Mid-engined 206 and later 246 cars were produced from 1967, as well as front-engined Coupe and Spiders. Simply branded as 'Dino', the market was slow to accept the cars, and very quickly the mid-engined cars became 'Ferrari Dino 206' and the front-engine cars became 'Fiat Dino'. The final Dino was the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4 launched in 1973 to replace the Dino 246 GT/GTS, and then the 'Dino' name was dropped.
