Launched in 1960, the Dodge Dart was designed to be the cheapest car in Plymouth showrooms and was based on a 118-inch Plymouth platform. Sedans, Coupes and Station Wagons were all unibody construction, and engines ranged from a 3.7-litre slant six up to 6.3-litre V8s. The Dodge Dart quickly overtook sales of the larger Dodge Matador and Polara, and made those cars look weak; it also weakened the Plymouth brand by taking its sales. Styling was changed for 1961 bringing it closer to that of the Polara.
