For the 1963 model year, Chrysler introduced a new Dodge Dart taking over from the Lancer. It shared the 111-inch wheelbase A-body of the Plymouth Valiant and was designed by Virgil Exner. For 1963 Dodge only offered a choice of two 6-cylinder engines, even in the 'GT' model, but a new 4.5-litre V8 was introduced in 1964. The A-body was availableas 2 or 4-door sedan, Station Wagon, 2-door hardtop and convertible. The 'GT' model was not a performance model, but simply a trim option above the '170' and the '270'. The concave vertical-barred grille of 1963 was restyled into a split convex horizonal grille for 1964, and flat grilles for 1965 and 1966.
