Ford Consul models In 1951 Ford launched the Consul MkI (EOTA) with a 4-cylinder 1508cc engine, and a body designed by George Walker from Dearborn. A 2262cc 6-cylinder version was introduced as the Ford Zephyr using a longer bonneted version of the same body, and the better equipped Zephyr Zodiac followed in 1953. Carbodies made convertible versions of the car, and ED Abbotts of Farnham turned Consuls and Zephyrs into Estate cars. In 1956 a new MkII Ford Consul was introduced along with MkII versions of the Ford Zephyr and Zodiac. In 1962 the new MkIII cars were introduced with new nameplates, and the 'Zephyr 4' replaced the 'Consul' badge on the 4-cylinder model, with 'Zephyr 6' being given to the 6-cylinder model. The Consul name did not die, but instead was given as a prefix on the Ford Consul Classic, Ford Consul Cortina and Ford Consul Corsair. In 1972 the 'Consul' name was given to a new lower-priced version of the pan-European Ford Granada. |
