Ford Cortina TC, TD 1970 - 1976 The Cortina MkIII was known internally as the 'TC' for Taunus Cortina because it was developed jointly between Ford Cologne and Ford Dagenham and underneath the skin the cars were the same. Harley Copp was responsible for the TC project, having already seen the Zephyr/Zodiac MkIV to the market. Launched in 1970, the 'coke bottle' shaped car looked even bigger than the MKII Cortina but in fact was only wider, although the wheelbase was longer. The styling is attributed to John Thallis who gave it it's coke-bottle' shape, although recent emigre from General Motors Semon 'Bunkie' Knudsen changed the styling to give this Cortina a Pontiac-like frontal design. Heavier than the MkII it was still launched with a 1300cc version as the base model, although most cars were 1600cc versions in 2-door, 4-door or 5-door Estates. Cortina 1600 GT and GXL versions used a new Pinto 1600 engine, whereas the lower trimmed 1600s used the Kent engine. The Cortina 2000 models used a 2000cc Pinto engine and were sold as L, XL, GT and GXL, the last two being given quad headlamps. The 'TD' Cortina was announced in 1973 with rectangular headlamps for the XL and GT versions and a new 2000E in place of the GXL. In 1976 the MkIV took on the 'Cortina' badges. |
