Ford Cortina TE (MkIV)
In 1976 the parallel lines of the British Ford Cortina MkIII and the German Ford Taunus TD converged, and the German product was developed into the universal Cortina TE and Taunus TC2 was reskinned to give a more modern appearance with bigger windows on the same mechanicals as the outgoing car. The body was styled by Uwe Bahnsen, who subsequently reworked the Ford Granada. German buyers got their TC2 in February 1976 whilst British buyers had to wait until October 1976 for their Cortina TE. Engine choices ranged from the carried over 1296cc Kent engine, 1593cc and 1993cc Pinto engines, and in 1977 the 2294cc Cologne V6. The 2000E Cortina TD was replaced by the 2300 V6 Ghia model, although the Ghia badge was also given to the 1600 Cortina too. There were 2-door and 4-door models, but the 2-door was mainly sold as a Taunus. A 5-door estate completed the line up however the body panels for this were carried over from the Taunus TC and did not benefit from bigger windows and a higher roof. There was no coupe version.

Ford Cortina 1600 L 1978 4-door. The 1600 L was in effect the entry model, although in theory a 1300 2-door model in base trim was offered. Britain did not sell many of either the 2-door or the 1300 Cortinas. Most common power unit was the 1600 or 2000 Pinto engines, but some 2300 Cologne V6 engines were also sold.

Ford Cortina MkIV 2.0 Ghia. Ford offered Ghia versions of the Cortina TE for the first time with the MkIV model. The Cortina 2.0 carried a 4-cylinder Pinto engine, although in Germany a 2.3litre Cologne V6 was available.

Ford Cortina MkIV 2.0 Ghia. Ford offered Ghia versions of the Cortina for the first time with the MkIV model. Ford had recently purchased the Design house Ghia, and now celebrated this by giving the top models of its cars with the 'Ghia' badges.

Ford Cortina 1600 L 1978 4-door. Uwe Bahnsen restyled the Cortina TE, mainly from the waistline upwards, since below the waist was very much the German Taunus TC. A lighter airy interior was the result.
