Ford Taunus 17M, 20M, 26M (P7 1967-71) Ford introduced the Taunus 17M in 1967 as part of its P7 model line with 1498cc, 1699cc or 1812cc V4 engines driving the rear wheels. A 20M model was also offered with the same body but with a choice of 1998cc or 2293cc V6 engines. The 'Taunus' name was not in fact badged on this model, although it is usually called the Taunus 17M/20M/26M. Bodywork offered was a choice of 2 and 4-door saloons, 3 and 5-door Turniers (Estate cars), a 2-door coupe, and a few coachbuilt cabriolets. The body was a monocoque design but was criticised as being fussy in design and rather big; after only one year a restyle was given to tidy up the appearance and give a better grille. In 1969 a more luxurious Taunus 26M was sold with 2550cc V6 engine. Production of the Taunus 17M, 20M and 26M ended in 1971 when Ford went over to making pan-European cars such as the Taunus/Cortina and Granada. |
