Ford Zephyr 4 (3008E) and Zephyr 6, Zodiac MkIV (3010E)
The MkIV version of the Ford Zephyr and Zodiac started in 1961 under Harley Copp, as project "Panda", with radical plans for new V-engines and advanced suspension and disc brakes. Launched in Spring 1966 as the Zephyr 4 with 1996cc V4 engine (3008E), or the Zephyr 6 with a 2495cc V6 engine (3010E). At the same time, the Zodiac was launched with 2994cc V6 engine (3012E). Part of the design was by Roy Haynes . The MkIV the longest Z-car body, almost 4-inches longer than the MkIII cars, and it was also 2 inches wider. Such a large body was criticised, especially the 'aircraft carrier' long bonnet, but the spare wheel was placed in the nose filling the space left by the short V-engines. Copp discarded much of the engineering of the previous Z-cars, and then insisted on independent rear suspension, the solution chosen could give difficult cornering with an empty car. As before Abbotts of Farnham offered Estate conversions. Zodiacs had quad headlamps, and there was an 'Executive' version with extra equipment. In 1972 the new Granada range took over from the Zephyr/Zodiac cars.
