As with many other satellites of the Ford Motor Company, production began in Australia with the Model T Ford at Geelong. Production of the Model A and the Model B followed Dearborn, until a 'Coupe Utility' was devised in Australia. This vehicle appealed to farmers as having the comfort of a car and the practicality of a Utility; Banks would also lend money on these 'Utes' as working vehicles when they wouldn't lend on cars. A new Ford factory was built at Melbourne in 1956. Postwar Ford of Australia decided to assemble British or European Fords, until 1960 when it added the American Ford Falcon which became a wholely Australian product from 1970 when the American Falcon stopped production. Ford of Australia had a similar story with the Ford Fairlane, but mostly Ford assembled European Fords or re-branded Japanese cars until closing in 2017.
