The 1957 Fords had new metalwork and a new chassis. Longer, lower and wider the 1957 Fords gave Dearborn an advantage over Michigan and the Blue Oval outsold The General for the first time in 1957. Ford supplemented the 'Fairlane' line with a new better trimmed 'Fairlane 500', and at the same time dropped the cheaper Custom onto a shorter wheelbase. A novel Skyliner option gave a Fairlane 500 with a retractable hardtop, which got people into the showrooms but didn't get them to open their wallets. Above the 'Fairlane 500' came a higher 'Galaxie' option, soon to become a model in its own right. Two new big block FE V8 engines were made available at 5.4-litre and 5.8-litre. 1958 Fairlanes were given quad headlamps.
