In 1959 Ford started the process of downgrading the Fairlane by introducing a new top trim model the 'Galaxie'. Confusingly, the Galaxie also carried 'Fairlane 500' badges on it. However, Joe Oros had restyled the 1959 Fairlane, which retained the wraparound rear window, whilst Galaxie models were given flat rear windows and thick c-pillars in the style of the contemporary Thunderbird. Windscreens were bigger for 1959, as were tail lamps. Under the bonnet engines were detuned for economy, but the chassis was unaltered from the 1958 frame, and continued into 1960 beneath a total re-skin.
