Launched as a sub model of the 1959 Ford Fairlane 500, the Galaxy 500 was higher priced and given additional trim. Staple engine for the Galaxie was the Ford Y-block V8 in 4.5-litre to 5.1-litre format, as well a 3.7-litre straight six and two larger FE V8 engines. However the 1959 Galaxie 500 was given a different c-pillar akin to that of the Thunderbird. There was also a Galaxie 500 Skyliner with a retractable hardtop as well as a more conventional Sunliner convertible. For 1960 the Galaxie was redesigned, and was changed again for 1961.
