For 1961 Ford shrunk the Galaxie by 4-inches, but it was still on a 119-inch wheelbase and 2-metres in girth. Optional power unit for the 1961 Galaxie 500 was the 390 6.4-litre V8 which could be ordered in 400 bhp 3 x 2-barrel form. For 1962 the Fairlane name was taken down to a new intermediate Ford and 'Galaxie' given to all full-size Ford models. The 'Galaxie 500' was a higher trim model, whilst the '500 XL' had sporty trim. The Galaxie was refreshed for 1963 but in mid year a new fastback with lower roofline was added specifically for improved aerodynamics in racing. The small 292 V8 was replaced firstly by the 260 V8 and later the better suited 289 V8. A new 7-litre 427 engine was developed for 'under 7-litre' racing regulations. A special lightweight version was offered for drag racing. However, the Galaxie was still too heavy to be competitive, and by 1965 had been eclipsed by the diminutive British Ford Lotus Cortina on track. An all new Galaxie was presented for 1965.
