Launched in 1964, the R8 Gordini enlarged the standard R8 engine to 1108cc and fitted it with a new cylinder head and a twin choke solex to extract 89bhp from the unit. In 1967 a 1255cc Gordini was launched with a 5-speed gearbox.

Renault R8 Gordini 1964. Badge on rear panel. Amedee Gordini had moved from Italy to France in the 1920s and by 1934 he was tuning French-built Fiats (badged 'Simca'). From 1946 Gordini was making and racing the Simca-Gordini cars until the contract was terminated in 1956. In that year a meeting with Renault's Pierre Dreyfus led to the Renault Dauphine-Gordini, and in turn to other Renault-Gordini cars before this outfit was absorbed into Renault Sport.
