Hillman Avenger (Plymouth Cricket)
The Hillman Avenger was designed under Roy Axe and launched in 1970, although the project had begun back in 1963 and had to wait for the Arrows cars to launch. A new ohv engine was developed in 1248cc, 1295cc, 1498cc and 1599cc versions, and the Avenger was intended for production in many world markets with different components and configurations. A five door Estate car was added to the range in 1972 and a two door version in 1973 that could be purchased as a GT or as a more basic model. In late 1972 the Hillman Avenger Tiger was announced mainly to re-invigorate Avenger sales, but also to provide a competition vehicle. In 1976 Avengers were re-badged 'Chrysler' and re-styled losing their 'bent' rear lights. In 1977 a shortened Avenger was developed into the Chrysler Sunbeam and this was turned into the competition car in place of the Avenger. In 1979 the 'Talbot' badge was given to the Avenger, but within a year production stopped. An American version was sold as the Plymouth Cricket.
