Hillman Husky (Imp) and Commer Imp Van The Hillman Imp project started as far back as 1955 at a time when 'Bubble Cars' often powered by Scooter engines were invading Europe and threatening the entry-level cars of the big manufacturers. Bob Saward designed the Imp body and the car was launched in May 1963. Launched in 1965 were the Commer Imp Van and the Hillman Super Imp. The Commer Imp Van was turned into the Hillman Husky Estate in 1967 with windows and seats. When designing the Imp Van, the height was determined as having to be enough for milk churchs to stand inside! Wider wheels and tyres were fitted to cope with the 5cwt load, but the engine was detuned for economy. In 1968 the 'Commer' badge was removed and vans were called 'Hillman Imp Van'. Sales ended in 1970 after about 10,500 Hillman Huskies and 18,000 Imp Vans had been produced. |
