For 1960 Chrysler gave its Imperials an all new bodyshell, mounted on a frame unlike the unibody cousins. Virgil Exner designed this body, and even though he fell from favour, Elwood Engel kept the body until after the 1963 model year. Separate front headlamps were the character of these cars, but for 1963 the grille became a single rather than split design, and the tail lights were tamed. A 6,781cc 340bhp V8 powered the Imperial. The term 'Southampton' was not given to the hardtops after 1962.
