Jaguar S-type
In 1963 a new version of the Mk2 was announced as a sportier and more expensive car; The Jaguar S-type 3.4 or 3.8. An enlarged boot with independent rear suspension beneath completed this upmarket Mk2. However, sales of the Mk2 slowed and the S-type was never taken up in big numbers. The S-type was upgraded as the Jaguar 420 in 1966, gaining the bigger 4235cc engine from the MkX as well as a front resembling that larger car.

Jaguar S-type was introduced in 1963 as a luxurious model to supplement the Mk II range. Equipped with independent rear suspension and more comfort, the S-type could be specified with either 3.4litre or 3.8litre engine.

The Jaguar S-type was built with a modified Mk II bodyshell having a new boot and a new front. Under the boot was a sophisticated independent rear suspension.

Jaguar S-type 3-8litre front
Jaguar S-type was introduced in 1963, and it shared most of the mechanics and body of the MkII, but with revised front and rear panels and independent rear suspension. Available with the engines of the 3.4litre and 3.8litre MkII, the S-type versions were heavier and slower and were seen as less sporting and more luxurious.

Most buyers opted for the more powerful 3.8 version, although the 3.4 was by no means under-powered. The 3.4 could set quite a fast pace and although not as quick as the Mk II 3.4, the car handled extremely well thanks to its new suspension layout.
