Lagonda LG6 and V12 Confusingly the Lagonda LG6 and V12 both looked alike, and had 4½litre engines. The difference was that the LG6 used the 4467cc six cylinder Meadows engine and the V12 used the new 4480cc V12 engine designed by W.O. Bentley. The V12 cars had a shorter chassis because its engine was not as long as the Meadows six, but bodystyles were shared between the two models. Announced at the 1937 Earls Court Motor Show, the LG6 had an all new chassis and WO Bentley had set out to build 'the finest car in the world', with Stuart Tresillian and Charles Sewell (also from Rolls-Royce) to assist him. Alan Good, the new proprietor of Lagonda challenged Bentley to enter 2 V12 cars in the 1939 Le Mans race, and Bentley got two cars to Le Sarthe on the understanding that performance would be held back in 1939 and a better attempt made in 1940; these V12 Lagondas finished 3rd and 4th in 1939 and of course did not run in 1940. About 190 Lagonda V12 were built |
