Lamborghini P400 Miura It is claimed that Gandini designed the Lamborghini Miura, but this is disputed by Giorgetto Giugiaro who claims to have drawn most of it. What is true is that the Miura was engineered in secret by Dallara, Stanzani and Wallace to create a car the antithesis of what their boss Ferruccio Lamborghini wanted. A rolling chassis of the mid-engined V12 car was exhibited at the 1965 Turin Salon and even without a body people wanted to place orders. Carrozzeria Bertone were commissioned to give the chassis a body, and the final design was signed off by Marcello Gandini , possibly developing work already started by Giorgetto Giugiaro who had left Bertone before the 1966 Geneva launch of the Miura. Named 'Miura' after a type of fighting bull raised on a ranch in Seville, Spain by the Miura family. A transversely mounted 3929cc V12 dohc engine was fitted into the car, and 474 were sold until 1969. The Miura S was launched at the 1968 Turin Salon with upgrades to the interior and an extra 20bhp from the engine, and a little chrome trim on the body. After 140 Miura S were produced, the Miura SV went into production with more power, wider rear track and no more 'eye lashes' on the headlamps. Production ended in 1972 after 764 had been sold and the Countach was launched. |
