Ferruccio Lamborghini spent the second world war as a mechanic with the Italian Air Force. In 1948 he modified a Fiat Topolino and drove it in the 1948 Mille Miglia until it crashed after 680 miles of the event. Using his agricultural background and his technical skills he started making Tractors out of left over war machinery. By 1951 Lamborghini Trattori was making its own tractors and the business did well so he bought a Ferrari. The Ferrari didn't please Ferrucio Lamborghini and he argued with Enzo Ferrari, the outcome being that Lamborghini decided to build the car that Ferrari could not. Lamborghi SpA was thus founded to build cars, whilst Lamborghini Trattori continued, and merged with SAME in 1973.
