Lancia Aurelia GT The Aurelia was launched in 1950 and had the first ever production V6 engine. B10 Aurelias had a 1754cc V6, B20 a 1991cc V6, and later there was 2451cc V6. Francesco De Virgilio did the V6 engine with Vittorio Jano the chassis. The 2-door B20 coupe GT model was also launched in 1951 built on a shortened B21 chassis and given a Ghia-designed body. Mario Felice Boano of Ghia designed the Lancia Aurelia B20 GT, but most GTs were built by Pininfarina after both Ghia and their sub-contractors Viotti failed to keep up with demand. The Aurelia GT became the classical GT profile. For 1952 an Aurelia Series II was announced with minor styling changes and an 80bhp version of the 1991cc V6, and there was also a twin carb 90bhp version. From the Series III cars announced in 1953 the engine grew to 2451cc and the body lost its tailfins. Series IV cars were given De Dion rear suspension and there were changes to the engine. Aurelias were replaced by the Lancia Flaminia after 1956, which took the engineering even further. |
